Certgate Smart Card MultimediaCard (MMC)

certgate GmbH, with their headquarters in Nuremberg, Germany, plan, develop and market products and solutions for data and communication security on mobile devices. The certgate products offer smart card security for all mobile devices, especially smart phones and PDAs.

The main component of the certgate products is the certgate Smart Card microSD, the combination of a Smart Card and a flash memory Card in the shape of a microSD card, a revolution in mobile security. It provides all functions and features of a conventional Smart Card with the design of a microSD card hence it can be used with all mobile devices, especially in Smartphones and PDAs too. Therewith business processes are expandable onto mobile devices delivering a significantly increased productivity without any loss of security complying with applicable security directives and certified by the German BSI. The most important features and USPs of the certgate products are compiled in the enclosed executive summary.

The certgate Smart microSD does not need hardware specific drivers vs. other solutions on the market! Furthermore the certgate architecture allows the integration of proprietary crypto chips without the necessity to adapt firmware. The certgate architecture is in principle a microSD card with built-in ISO Smart Card reader!

Besides the certgate Smart Card microSD PKI, the certgate portfolio also comprises the following products:

  • certgate CSP and PKCS#11 middleware
  • certgate API, a programming interface for the full integration of Smart Card functions into applications
  • certgate microSD Java Card, which is an open Java Card for the development and usage of customized cardlets
  • certgate Development Kit Java Card (CDK), for quick and simple development and integration of proprietary smart card applications for the certgate microSD Java Card
  • certgate OEM, certgate Smart Card with customized Crypto Chip and/or OEM Smart Card operating system (e.g. TCOS Chip)
  • certgate Evaluator External Smart Card (CEESC): For test and integration of your own cryptographic processor in the certgate environment

Certgate Adds New Level Of Security For Windows Mobile

The Protector for Smart Phones is a hardware-based security solution for the protection of sensitive data and mobile communications

The Nuremberg-based company certgate is going to present its latest innovation at CeBIT 2009: the Protector for Smart Phones, a hardware-based security solution for the reliable protection even of very sensitive data and mobile communications. A smart card of the microSD type is used to encrypt both user data and access/retrieval rights. This enables security-conscious businesses to integrate smart phones into their firm networks without having to worry about opening potential security gaps.

certgate's Protector for Smart Phones offers a randomly scalable security level for Windows mobile devices, including a high-end solution for top security zones. It uses the certgate Smart Card functionality to prevent unauthorized access by ensuring tamper proof smart phone configuration. Whenever required, functions like Bluetooth, WLAN, or ActiveSync etc. are deactivated and certain applications and ports are blocked ? as a result, infiltration with harmful software is effectively prevented.

"A top-security military cell phone of the kind the American president uses would obviously be unreasonable for us Europeans," says Dr. Paschalis Papagrigoriou, CEO of certgate GmbH. "On the other hand, mobile devices without hardware protection represent a serious risk for network safety." To avoid that risk, Papagrigoriou further points out, many large organizations have simply prohibited their staff from using Smart Phones. "But with our solution, even mobile devices can be integrated in the PKI."

The certgate Smart Card is equipped with a crypto-processor capable of generating and storing digital key pairs (RSA 2048 Bit). Certificates and keys stored on the Smart Card are used to encrypt all user data, thus protecting them against unauthorized access even if the device is lost. In addition, they are also used to encrypt and electronically sign e-mails and to access protected networks (VPN) or secure websites (SSL).

With the certgate Protector, companies will now be able to extend their security concepts to their managers' and field staff's handhelds and smart phones.
